MetLife Stadium — America's Largest NFL Venue
Capacity 82,500. Home of the New York Giants and New York Jets. The only stadium shared by two NFL teams in the same division — and the largest in the league.
History & Construction
MetLife Stadium opened on 1 April 2010, replacing the ageing Giants Stadium that had stood on the same Meadowlands Sports Complex site since 1976. The new venue was privately financed at a cost of approximately $1.6 billion — split equally between the New York Giants and the New York Jets, making it the only NFL stadium jointly owned and operated by two NFL franchises.
The design by Ewing Cole and 360 Architecture (now HOK) produces an open-air bowl with an eight-storey-tall exterior facade clad in translucent ETFE panels that can be backlit in either Giants blue or Jets green. The steel structure weighs roughly 44,000 tons, and the 11.5-acre roof canopy shades spectators without fully enclosing the bowl — preserving the authentic outdoor NFL experience while reducing wind impact on the field.
Situated in the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, the stadium occupies a unique position in American sport: it is the only facility shared by two teams that play in the same NFL division — both the Giants and the Jets belong to the NFC East and AFC East respectively — yet share not a single locker room wall. Each team maintains completely separate team areas, a feat of architectural planning rarely attempted at this scale.
The Two Teams
Giants
&
Jets
The New York Giants, one of the NFL's founding franchises (est. 1925), have won four Super Bowl championships — most recently Super Bowl XLII and XLVI in 2008 and 2012. The Giants draw one of the most loyal fan bases in the league, filling MetLife for each of their eight regular-season home games with a crowd that averages close to capacity.
The New York Jets last reached the pinnacle in Super Bowl III (1969), when quarterback Joe Namath's guaranteed victory over the Baltimore Colts became one of sport's defining upsets. Despite the long gap since their championship, the Jets' MetLife games are among the most anticipated in the AFC, with the stadium transforming entirely — from green-trimmed press materials to the illuminated exterior panels — for each home fixture.
The stadium's dual-identity design means that visiting fans encounter a dramatically different visual experience depending on which team is at home. No branding is permanent: all on-field logos, end-zone lettering, and internal signage can be swapped between the two franchises within hours of a game ending.
Record Crowds & Major Events
XLVIII
Super Bowl 2014
MetLife Stadium hosted Super Bowl XLVIII on 2 February 2014 — the first Super Bowl ever played in an open-air, cold-weather venue in the game's history. The Seattle Seahawks defeated the Denver Broncos 43–8 in front of 82,529 fans, a moment that silenced years of debate about whether the NFL's biggest game could be contested outdoors in a northern climate.
Beyond the NFL calendar, MetLife is among the most active concert venues in the United States. Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour, and Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band have each drawn sell-out crowds exceeding 80,000. The stadium's open-air configuration and sightlines make it one of the preferred large-capacity concert destinations on the east coast.
The venue also plays a pivotal role in the 2026 FIFA World Cup: MetLife Stadium is scheduled to host the tournament final on 19 July 2026, cementing its status as the most consequential multi-sport venue in North America. College football, international soccer friendlies, and WrestleMania have all been staged here, each drawing its own record crowds to the Meadowlands.
Stadium Features
Seating & Sightlines
All 82,500 seats face the field directly — there are no obstructed-view seats and no posts interrupting the sightlines. The lower bowl's steep rake angle brings the upper deck within exceptional proximity to the action. Club and suite levels offer cushioned seating, climate-controlled areas, and private food service. The press level sits high enough to provide the panoramic perspective that MetLife's camera work is known for worldwide.
Premium Amenities
MetLife contains 10,005 club seats, 218 luxury suites, and two 10,000 sq ft party suites capable of accommodating hundreds of guests. Concessions span the full range of stadium food from classic hot dogs to full-service restaurant experiences at the club level. The venue features over 1,200 TV monitors throughout its concourses, ensuring fans never miss a play from the moment they step through the gates.
Location & Transport
Located in East Rutherford, NJ, MetLife Stadium is less than 10 miles west of Midtown Manhattan. On game days, NJ Transit operates dedicated train service on the Meadowlands Rail Line directly to the stadium — the most convenient and cost-effective option from Penn Station. Over 28,000 parking spaces surround the complex. Rideshare drop-off zones are clearly marked, and for international visitors the venue is easily reached from Newark Liberty International Airport in under 20 minutes.

How do I get to MetLife Stadium from New York City?
The most convenient route from Manhattan is NJ Transit's Meadowlands Rail Line, which runs direct service to the stadium on event days from Penn Station. Journey time is approximately 25–30 minutes. Trains are timed to match kickoffs and concerts, with additional services after events end. Driving via Route 3 West is also an option — allow extra time for post-game traffic, and note that parking costs are charged on top of the ticket price.
Is MetLife Stadium indoors or outdoors?
MetLife Stadium is an open-air venue — it has no retractable roof. A roof canopy covers the seating tiers but not the playing field itself. This means all weather conditions affect game day: rain, wind, and cold are all possibilities from October onward. Fans attending autumn and winter games are strongly advised to dress in layers and bring waterproofs. The 2014 Super Bowl XLVIII was played there in cold weather, which proved the venue fully capable of hosting major events in winter conditions.
How does Hundred Ideas Co. help with MetLife Stadium tickets?
After you submit the contact form on our site, our representative Hannys Aniston reviews your request — which game or event, preferred seating area, group size, and any accessibility requirements — and responds with available ticket options and pricing. We guide you through the process from initial enquiry to confirmed purchase, saving you the time and uncertainty of navigating third-party resale markets alone.
Which team — Giants or Jets — plays more home games at MetLife?
Both teams play eight regular-season home games per NFL season, making the total shared home schedule 16 games each year — excluding pre-season and any playoff fixtures. The two schedules are coordinated so the Giants and Jets alternate home games week by week through the season, meaning the stadium hosts professional NFL football on most weekends between September and January.
