SoFi Stadium — The World's Most Expensive Sports Venue

At $5.5 billion, SoFi Stadium redefined what a modern arena could be. Zero obstructed-view pillars, a translucent canopy that traps crowd noise, and 70,000 sq ft of LED displays — all tucked inside the Hollywood Park development on the edge of Los Angeles.

History & Vision

Stan Kroenke spent years engineering the relocation of the St. Louis Rams back to Los Angeles — a move completed in 2016 — and broke ground on what would become SoFi Stadium that same year. The 298-acre Hollywood Park site had sat dormant since the old racetrack closed in 2013. Kroenke's vision was to build not merely a stadium, but a self-contained entertainment district: hotels, retail, a performance venue, parks, and a lagoon all radiating from the arena itself.

Construction took four years and involved more than 7,000 workers at peak activity. The stadium opened in September 2020 — delayed from its original July date by the COVID-19 pandemic — making it the most expensive private sports venue ever constructed anywhere on Earth.

Architecture & Design

Architects HKS Inc faced a constraint shared by no other NFL venue: Inglewood sits beneath one of the busiest flight paths in the world, directly in the approach corridor to LAX. Federal Aviation Administration height restrictions capped the roof at just 100 feet above the playing field. The solution — a translucent ETFE canopy — allows natural light in while enclosing the bowl to create the thunderous acoustic environment fans experience on game day.

Perhaps the most striking interior element is the dual-sided Oculus: a 70,000-square-foot LED display that hangs over the field and shows content facing both directions simultaneously. No column interrupts a single sightline in the entire seating bowl — a structural achievement that required enormous cantilevered steel work anchored to the perimeter frame.

A 2.5-mile pedestrian bridge connects SoFi Stadium to the surrounding Hollywood Park neighbourhood, letting fans walk to nearby transit and the developing commercial district without crossing a single road at grade level.

The Teams

SoFi Stadium is the home ground of both the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers — a shared arrangement that keeps the schedule full and gives fans in Southern California two NFL teams to follow across the same spectacular building.

The Rams already know the place intimately: they won Super Bowl LVI here in February 2022, defeating the Cincinnati Bengals 23–20 in front of a raucous home crowd in one of the most dramatic endings in Super Bowl history. For many fans worldwide, that night was the moment SoFi Stadium announced itself as worthy of the grandest occasions American sport can offer.

The Chargers — returning to Los Angeles after decades in San Diego — carry a passionate fanbase that turned SoFi Stadium into a genuine home environment for the first time in years. Both clubs play their full home schedules here, meaning there are roughly 16–20 NFL home games per season for LA fans to attend.

Entertainment Capital

SoFi Stadium's calendar extends far beyond football season. WWE staged WrestleMania 37 here in 2021 — the first WrestleMania held with a live crowd following the pandemic shutdown — and returned for WrestleMania 39 in 2023, where back-to-back nights drew more than 160,000 fans combined. Copa America 2024 used the venue as one of its showpiece grounds, reinforcing SoFi's status as a truly global sports facility.

The concert infrastructure is exceptional. A full production stage fits inside the bowl without restricting sight lines from the upper deck, and the enclosed canopy provides the kind of acoustic environment that touring productions normally cannot achieve outdoors. Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, and several of the largest touring acts in the world have performed here since opening.

College Football Playoff games, the NFL Draft, and the BCS Championship are all scheduled or have already been staged here. The venue's proximity to Los Angeles International Airport and the Hollywood Park hotel complex means international visitors can arrive, stay, and attend events without requiring a car.

Stadium Features

📡

Cutting-Edge Technology

The double-sided Oculus scoreboard is the largest in NFL history at 70,000 sq ft of LED surface. Every seat in the house has an unobstructed view — no pillar stands between a fan and the field. The venue's Wi-Fi network supports simultaneous connectivity for all 70,000 attendees, with dedicated bandwidth for media production and broadcast trucks parked in the stadium's underground truck court.

🏟️

Guest Experience

260 premium suites, two clubs (the Owners Club and the Delta Sky360° Club), and more than 100 food and beverage concession points spread across six levels. The enclosed canopy keeps fans comfortable in Southern California's heat without sealing out the open-air atmosphere entirely. Accessible seating, companion seating, and sensory-sensitive viewing spaces are built into every level of the bowl.

🚌

Getting There

The Metro K Line (Crenshaw) stops at the Hawthorne/Lennox station, roughly a 10-minute walk from the stadium entrance. Rideshare drop-off zones are designated on Prairie Avenue. The stadium is 3.5 miles from LAX, making it one of the most accessible NFL venues in North America for arriving international travellers. On-site parking garages hold approximately 12,000 spaces, with pre-purchased passes strongly recommended for game-day arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions

SoFi Stadium cost approximately $5.5 billion to construct, making it the most expensive stadium ever built anywhere in the world. The cost reflects the complexity of the enclosed ETFE canopy roof, the enormous LED Oculus display system, the underground truck court, and the broader Hollywood Park development infrastructure that surrounds the stadium.

Both the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers call SoFi Stadium home. The two teams share the facility and play their full home schedules here throughout the NFL season, typically from September to January. The Rams won Super Bowl LVI at SoFi Stadium in February 2022.

SoFi Stadium is fully enclosed by a translucent ETFE canopy, but it is not climate-controlled in the traditional air-conditioned sense. The canopy shields fans from sun and rain while allowing natural light through. LAX flight-path height restrictions meant the roof could not be raised high enough for a conventional HVAC system to condition the entire seating bowl.

The Metro K Line (Crenshaw Line) offers the easiest public-transport option. Alight at Hawthorne/Lennox station and walk approximately 10–12 minutes to the stadium entrance via the pedestrian bridge. The K Line connects to the A Line (Blue) at Rosa Parks station, giving fans access from downtown Los Angeles and Long Beach. Service is enhanced on major event days with additional train frequency.
